How do you feel about something like Gears of War 1-3? Same engine, same team, reused a lot of stuff with minor tweaks.
I think that reusing assets and systems is a great idea, so long as the game is fun. I do worry about burnout for these titles though, both player and developer. 10 years is a long time to be working on the same "project", even if that's three games one after the other. I can't keep my attention focused for more than a month, so that's an astronomical time for me.
OK and another, what are your thoughts on the Kemco RPGs, and all the RPG Maker games that use mostly the same art/sprites.
I would say Gears is a solid example, yeah, although I don't know if it was planned to be a trilogy from the start? But I think all three games were excellent, you could see them improving as they progressed and the team got even more familiar with the tools and such. I'm not sure what budgets were for those games, but I have to imagine doing them all with mostly the same team and engine and some repeated assets helped a lot.
The dev burnout is a fair concern! It sort of depends on the developers being very passionate for what they're working on, and I know that's not always the case, or that desires/priorities change. I think I'm less worried about player burnout generally, if only because we've seen so many examples of gamers willing to keep coming back to the same formula over and over when it's done well. But I may be *too* optimistic :)
Re: Kemco and RPG Maker games, I'm generally pretty ok with them and there are a few I've played that I like quite a bit. I wish Kemco specifically would maybe be a little more ambitious with their writing. As in, if they're going to be re-using a lot of assets and cranking these out so quickly anyway, it would be cool to see them plan out a series versus having so many of them as totally stand-alone.
